Hockey World Cup: Unbeaten India eye second round as desperate England stand in way

For India, today’s match is about more than simply securing progression. The team’s confidence has grown through its performances, while the combination of experienced campaigners and World Cup debutants has created belief that this could be a significant tournament for Indian women’s hockey.

Savita had already set an ambitious target before the competition began, making it clear that the team wants to challenge for a place on the podium.

“Whether anyone expects us or not, we have high expectations for ourselves. Even before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, no one imagined we would finish fourth. This time, in the World Cup, we want to go one step further and finish on the podium so that Indian women's hockey has a rich legacy, just like men's hockey.”

A strong performance against England would not only send India into the second round but also reinforce their growing belief that a historic World Cup campaign is within reach.

India coach Sjoerd Marijne has warned his players against being carried away by their strong start and believes there are still clear areas that need improvement.

“We shouldn't rest easy after holding China to a draw and defeating South Africa. England are a very good team and gave China a tough challenge. They are ranked higher than us and have already defeated us this year, so we need to play cautiously,” Marijne said.

The coach also identified passing as an area where India must improve.

“The quality of passing should be better. We always talk in India about individual skills, but international hockey is all about passing. We were a little bumpy today in passing, not efficient with the direction or receiving,” he said.

Against an England side capable of punishing turnovers, India’s ability to improve that aspect could be decisive.

England will present a significantly tougher challenge despite their mixed results so far.

They have already beaten India 2-0 in the World Cup qualifiers in Hyderabad earlier this year and possess the ability to dominate possession before quickly exploiting spaces on the counter. Their 4-0 victory over South Africa underlined their attacking threat, although they suffered a 2-4 defeat against China in their following match.

That result has left England in a must-win situation, adding another layer of pressure to today’s contest.

India, by contrast, know a draw is sufficient to take them through as pool winners. That difference in circumstances could influence the tempo of the match, with England expected to take greater risks as the contest progresses. India will need to resist being drawn into an unnecessarily open game.

India’s defensive unit has also looked more assured as the tournament has progressed.

Led by Sushila Chanu, the side conceded only two penalty corners against South Africa, while goalkeeper Bichu Devi and veteran Savita Punia have provided stability at the back. Savita, who has crossed the 300-international appearance mark, brings considerable experience to a relatively young squad.

That balance between emerging players and seasoned campaigners has helped India recover quickly from difficult moments in their opening two matches.

Against England, their defensive discipline could prove particularly important, given the quality of the opposition’s attack.

India cannot afford to allow England easy opportunities to counter or create sustained pressure around the circle, especially with the English side needing a win to remain in contention.

India’s biggest positive so far has been the variety in their attacking play.

Six different players found the net in the emphatic win over South Africa, highlighting the depth available to a side featuring 11 World Cup debutants.

Deepika and Navneet Kaur have already scored twice each, while Lalremsiami and Sunelita Toppo have added pace and penetration to the forward line. The ability to find goals from different sources has made India difficult to contain, particularly when they are able to move the ball quickly into the attacking third.

Against England, however, India will need to combine that attacking freedom with greater efficiency in possession. The English side are likely to test India’s ability to maintain composure and structure, especially during periods when they are forced to defend without the ball.
